1. Our Commitment to Student Privacy
Math Journey (“we”, “our”, or “the Platform”) is committed to protecting the privacy, security, and dignity of all users, particularly children and students using our services within Ontario’s education system.
We recognize that student information is sensitive and will collect, use, store, and protect personal information in accordance with applicable Ontario privacy legislation, school board requirements, and accepted best practices for educational technology services.
Our guiding principles are:
- Collect only the information necessary to deliver educational services.
- Be transparent about what information is collected and why.
- Never sell student information.
- Never use student information for advertising or commercial profiling.
- Provide schools, parents, and students with appropriate control over their information.
- Protect all information using reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards.
2. Information We Collect
Student Information
Where required to provide the Math Journey learning experience, we may collect:
- Student first name or preferred name.
- School or classroom identifier.
- Grade level.
- Teacher or educator assignment.
- Student progress, achievement, completed lessons, and learning analytics.
- User-created content submitted as part of learning activities.
Math Journey is designed to operate using the minimum amount of personally identifiable information necessary to support learning.
We do not require students to provide:
- Home addresses.
- Personal phone numbers.
- Personal financial information.
- Social insurance numbers.
- Personal social media accounts.
3. How We Use Student Information
Student information is used solely for educational purposes, including:
- Providing access to learning content.
- Delivering age-appropriate mathematics instruction.
- Tracking progress and identifying learning opportunities.
- Allowing teachers and schools to monitor educational outcomes.
- Maintaining and improving the quality, reliability, accessibility, and security of the Platform.
Personal information will only be used for the purpose for which it was collected, for a consistent educational purpose, or where authorized or required by law.
4. Artificial Intelligence and Learning Analytics
Math Journey may use artificial intelligence, adaptive learning systems, and analytics to personalize the student learning experience.
When AI features are used:
- AI will be used solely to support educational outcomes.
- Student information will not be used to train public or commercial artificial intelligence models.
- Student data will not be sold, licensed, or shared for unrelated commercial purposes.
- AI-generated recommendations will remain subject to educator oversight.
- Students and educators will maintain control over educational decisions.
5. Information Sharing and Disclosure
Math Journey does not sell or rent student information.
Student information may only be shared:
- With authorized teachers and school administrators.
- With the applicable school board where required to support educational services.
- With approved service providers who support the operation of the Platform and who are contractually required to maintain confidentiality and appropriate security protections.
- Where required by applicable law.
Any third-party service providers engaged by Math Journey must meet appropriate privacy and security standards consistent with Ontario school board expectations. Ontario school boards remain responsible for ensuring third-party educational tools appropriately protect student information under MFIPPA.
6. Consent and Student Rights
Where consent is required, Math Journey will work with schools and school boards to ensure that appropriate consent is obtained from students, parents, or guardians as required by Ontario law.
Parents and guardians may have rights to access or request corrections to their child’s information in accordance with applicable legislation and school board procedures. Consent requirements may vary depending on the age of the student and the applicable legal authority.
7. Data Security
Math Journey maintains appropriate administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect personal information against:
- Unauthorized access.
- Unauthorized disclosure.
- Loss or theft.
- Improper modification.
- Destruction.
Our security practices may include:
- Encryption of information in transit and at rest where appropriate.
- Secure authentication controls.
- Access restrictions based on user roles.
- Monitoring and logging of system activity.
- Regular security reviews and updates.
Security safeguards are designed to be proportionate to the sensitivity of student information being protected.
8. Data Storage and Residency
Math Journey is committed to transparency regarding where student information is stored and processed.
Where possible, student information will be stored and processed within Canada using secure data infrastructure.
If any information is processed outside of Canada, Math Journey will ensure that appropriate contractual, technical, and organizational safeguards are in place and will disclose such arrangements to the applicable school board.
9. Data Retention and Deletion
Math Journey retains personal information only for as long as necessary to provide educational services, satisfy contractual obligations with schools or school boards, comply with applicable laws, or resolve legitimate operational requirements.
When information is no longer required, it will be securely deleted, anonymized, or destroyed in accordance with applicable retention requirements and secure destruction practices.
10. Student Accounts and Teacher Control
Schools and educators maintain oversight of student accounts.
Teachers or authorized school administrators may:
- Create and manage classroom accounts.
- Review student progress.
- Correct inaccuracies.
- Request the removal or deactivation of student accounts where appropriate.
11. Cookies and Technical Information
Math Journey may collect limited technical information necessary for the secure operation of the Platform, such as:
- Device type.
- Browser information.
- System performance data.
- Login and session information.
This information is used for security, troubleshooting, accessibility, and improving system performance.
Math Journey does not use student browsing behaviour for advertising, marketing, or profiling.
12. Privacy Impact Assessments and School Board Review
Math Journey will cooperate with Ontario school boards in completing privacy reviews, security questionnaires, privacy impact assessments, or other evaluations required before deployment within a school environment.
We will provide clear documentation describing:
- What information is collected.
- Why it is collected.
- How it is protected.
- Where it is stored.
- Who can access it.
- How long it is retained.
This approach aligns with the Ontario Student Digital Privacy Standard for classroom applications and online educational services.
13. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in technology, legal requirements, or improvements to our services.
Any material changes affecting the collection, use, or disclosure of student information will be communicated to affected schools or users as required.
