A Proven Approach to Learning Math

Hi, I’m Doug Collins, a lifelong math advocate with a degree in mathematics, and the original creator of Math Quest 1.

I’ve dedicated my career to helping children build strong learning foundations.

If you have children, or know children, who deserve a head start in math and in learning overall, you’re in the right place.

Doug Collins, creator of Math Quest 1 and Math Journey

Math Journey is a modern, web-based program built on proven methods I first developed in the 1980s with Math Quest 1. For decades, this approach has helped young learners develop not just math skills, but the thinking skills that shape success in every subject.

At 75 years old, having travelled the world, worked in many professions, owned businesses, and authored books, I’ve had the opportunity to reflect on what truly creates opportunity and success in life.

Looking back, life resembles a tree. Education forms the roots. From those roots grows the trunk, a solid foundation of knowledge and confidence, and from there come the branches: careers, experiences, achievements, and personal growth.

For every child, that journey begins with the basics: pluses and minuses, multiplying and dividing. These early lessons may seem simple, but they are the roots that support everything that follows.

Without strong roots, a tree struggles to grow.
The same is true for children without a solid educational foundation.

One of my roles in life was as an auditor, and that perspective inspired part of the philosophy behind Math Journey.
Sometimes the most valuable thing we can do is pause and assess the foundation. How healthy are your child’s learning roots?
Are they truly confident in the basics, or are there gaps that could make future learning more difficult?

Math Journey was created to answer those questions in a supportive and encouraging way. It’s not a game—it’s a guided learning and assessment
program that identifies strengths, gently addresses struggles, and builds confidence through progress and mastery.

Why Math Journey Works

Math Journey isn’t just about numbers. It’s about teaching children how to learn.
As students work through math problems, they’re also practicing:

  • Structured learning
  • Logical thinking
  • Basic problem solving
  • Confidence building through repetition and mastery

Even something as simple as learning that 1 + 1 = 2 becomes
the first step toward a lifetime of effective thinking.

As mathematician Sarah Hart puts it beautifully:

“The universe is full of underlying structure, pattern, and regularity, and mathematics is the best tool we have for understanding it.”

The Early Years Matter Most

The early stages of education shape how a child learns everything that comes after. Yet many educators over the years have asked,

“Why not just use a calculator?”

The answer is simple:

“A calculator can give an answer, but it can’t build a mind.”

Children need the opportunity to exercise their brains—especially early on—so they can develop the cognitive strength required for all future learning.

Removing Barriers, Building Confidence

Many children struggle with basic math for reasons that have nothing to do with intelligence. Some fear making mistakes in front of adults. Others, like my own son—now a nuclear chemist—struggled with fine motor skills that made writing numbers difficult and, at times, discouraging.

Math Journey was designed to remove those barriers.

By eliminating embarrassment and replacing it with accomplishment, children stay motivated, engaged, and proud of their progress.

Math Journey provides a simple but vital way
to ensure your child is ready to move onward and upward through the tree of life
—with strong roots, growing confidence, and the tools they need to succeed.
